What is Puja ?
Puja is the act of showing our faith and respect to a
God, a spirit, or another aspect of the divine through
invocations, prayers, songs, and rituals thereby making
a spiritual connection with the divine. Most often this
contact is facilitated through an object: an Image,
element of nature, a sculpture, a painting, or a print.
It is a well known fact that the entire universe along
with all its planets have been created by the supreme
power ( God ) and hence it is also possible to reduce
one's sufferings due to the unfavorable position of
planets through sincere reliance on God by performing
the necessary Puja.
During Puja an image or other symbol of the god serves
as a means of gaining access to the divine. This icon is
not the deity itself; rather, it is believed to be
filled with the deity's cosmic energy. It is a focal
point for honoring and communicating with the God.. The
objects are created as receptacles for spiritual energy
that allow the devotee to experience direct
communication with his or her Gods.
Benefits of a Puja :-
According to our sacred texts, Puja is done for
1. There are several malefic ( unfavorable ) forces that
threaten our Peace and Happiness.
These forces can be eliminated with the help of a Puja.
2. If a person wants to go ahead on a spiritual path, he
needs to do Pujas which immensely
help him achieve this goal of gaining Spiritual
prosperity.
3. A Puja is also a must if one is about to start a new
venture like Business, construction of a
House or for some important events like a Journey,
Exams, Marriage and likewise
4. Puja is also performed to create positive vibrations
in the house so that the life of the
residents should be peaceful and without any troubles.
5. Puja is also performed to create positive atmosphere
in the office so that the business runs
smoothly thereby bringing about material abundance
6. Puja is a must at the time of Marriage as the newly
wed couple needs all the blessings of
Gods for a happy and a successful Married Life.
7. Puja is also immensely helpful when one is suffering
from some severe ailment of any kind
related to Body, Brain or Soul.
In Short, whenever we do anything new or we face any
problem beyond our control, we should seek the blessings
of the almighty God by performing necessary Puja and
Homam.
Puja establishes a bridge between the worshipper (the
lover) and the deity (the loved). It facilitates flow of
love-energy in both ways. This energy not only purifies
the self but also re-vitalizes the body's resources,
making one experience, what is called HOLY BLISS. Thus
both the worshipped and the worshipper benefit from Puja.
Now normal day to day Puja can be done by anyone all by
themselves, but for performing specific Pujas and Homas,
it is very necessary to stress upon that all these Pujas
and Homas should be performed by performed by learned
Brahmins and Pundits to get proper benefits as they
perform them in a perfect way being fully well versed in
the puja procedures than a layman. For this a " Sankalp
" is taken in the name of the person for whom this puja
has to be performed.
How Puja is Performed?
A worshipper is required to purify his/her body and
mind. The Puranas lay more stress on the quality of
devotion and puja procedures. Puja originated as a
substitute to homa and other Vedic sacrifices Due to
Buddhist and Jain influences that preached non-violence,
and with the development of iconography, idol worship
and puja became a great tool for getting the blessing of
the almighty God It was also recognized that worship was
essential for all, whatever the gender or caste (see
Varna) and therefore puja was formalized as a universal
option instead of the exclusive homam.
What is Homam?
Homams are pujas performed for a particular deity by
invoking Agni - the God of fire.
It is said that when Lord Brahma (the creator among the
Trinity) created man, he also created "Homam" for man's
livelihood and his attainment of spiritual desires. The
fundamental premise of Homam is derived from the Vedams,
although, according to "Purusha Sooktham", it is the
other way around - Vedams originated from Homam! The
goal of all Homams is the prosperity of the people at
large by energizing and protecting the environment. The
Sun is considered as the main source of energy supply,
and fire is considered as a representation of the Sun's
energy. According to the ancient texts on Homam, any
offer to Fire as a god, is actually an offer to Sun.
How Homam is performed?
Each Homam should be performed strictly according to the
guidelines prescribed by our ancient sages and our vedic
literature. These are to be conducted by fully learned
and experienced vedic scholars. The ingredients recquired
for these homams are different for each homams. Each
homam is to be performed after praying (Shankalpa) for
the specific relief / benefit desired for each
individual.
Now it may not be possible for a layman to perform Puja
and Homas as per these strict guidelines and other
necessary rituals. Hence it is always better to get them
done with the help of experienced Purohits who are well
versed with all the procedures and rituals.
